India’s premier pacer Jasprit Bumrah, on Friday, became India’s leading wicket-taker in T20 internationals. The right-arm pacer achieved the feat during an ICC men’s T20 World Cup Super 12 group 2 match at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium.
What makes the landmark special is that it came in a crucial match for India in the T20 World Cup. For India to keep their slim chances of keeping the semis hopes alive, they need to beat Scotland. Primarily, they need to overhaul the target of 86 inside 7 overs to improve their net run rate and be placed higher than Afghanistan in the points table.
Bumrah reached the landmark in 54 matches at a strike rate of 18.1. With the best bowling figure of 3/11, the Mumbai bowler has an average of 19.85 and has a healthy economy of 6.55.
He is followed by Yuzvendra Chahal (63 wickets), Ravichandran Ashwin (55) and Bhuvneshwar Kumar (50) in the list of most T20I wickets for India.
As far as the match is concerned, captain Virat Kohli won a crucial toss on his birthday, leaving a smile on his face. He then invited Scotland to bat, citing the dew factor.
The Indian bowlers were right on the money as they kept chipping away at wickets at regular intervals to leave the opposition high and dry.
Scotland found the Indian bowling unit too hot to handle as they failed to counter both the pacers and the spinners.
Spinner Ravindra Jadeja was the pick of the bowlers for India. He returned with figures of 3/15 in four overs. Apart from him, Mohammad Shami breathed fire, returning with handsome figures of 3/15 in three overs.
The other bowlers who chipped in with the wickets are Bumrah (2/10) and Ravichandran Ashwin (1/29).
India started their T20 World Cup campaign with a 10-wicket defeat against arch-rivals Pakistan on October 24. They followed it with yet another defeat against New Zealand in a do-or-die match.
