Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola on Wednesday refused to comment on the mass brawl between the players of the two sides in the explosive 0-0 second leg of the quarter-final tie at the Wanda Metropolitano that saw City go through to the semis on an aggregate score of 1-0.

“It is the champion of Spain and they played with energy and in second half were better than us and we were lucky we didn’t concede. In the first half we had chances, overall we are in the semi-finals – it is well deserved,” Guardiola told BTSport after the match.

“The opponent is so tough. All the teams in Champions League come here an suffer so it is important we go through,” he added.

When quizzed about the mass brawl sparked by Felipe’s challenge on Phil Foden, and on whether Diego Simeone’s aggressive team had crossed a line, Guardiola said, “Nothing to say.”

The Spaniard also dodged questions about Atletico’s targeting of Foden, and told BTSport, “I don’t know I cannot talk about what other people do, I don’t know.”

City’s victory on Wednesday came at the cost of Kevin de Bruyne who hobbled off the pitch and was later seen sitting with an ice pack.

Commenting on his team’s injuries, Guardiola said, “We are in big trouble, so we can’t forget we played three days ago. We travelled, come here, have a lot of injuries now and I don’t know what will happen in the next weeks.”

“But today we celebrate because it is the third time in Manchester City’s history we are in the Champions League semi-finals,” the Spaniard concluded.

City face Liverpool, who drew 3-3 against Benfica on the night to also progress to the UCL semis, in the semi-finals of the FA Cup on Saturday.
