After commencing on July 23, the Tokyo Olympics is nearing the fag end of the competition. The United States and China are for squaring off for the top spot in the medals tally. While China is currently on top of the gold medal tally, with a count of 36, the United States occupy the second spot with a total of 31 gold medals.

However, the American contingent has bagged more medals overall, 98 in total. Out of the medals in the United States’ bag, the gold, silver and bronze ratio stands at 31-36-31. 

The United States gained nine medals on August 6. But come Day 16 of the sporting gala, the United States team will be hoping to extend their overall lead and close down the gap in the gold medals tally.

Team USA will kick off the day’s affairs in women’s golf, Jessica Korda, Danielle Kang, Nelly Korda, Lexi Thompson will be representing the country on the course for the fourth round.

Jordan Windle and Brandon Loschiavo will compete in men’s 10-metre platform diving semifinals while in rhythmic gymnastics, Laura Zeng and Evita Griskenas will compete for the country in the group all-around qualifiers.

Meanwhile, the star-studded men’s basketball team will compete in the finals against France. Kevin Durant and co. will be pegged to win but don’t write it off as an assured gold medal. The baseball team will take on Japan in the men’s final. 

Amro Elgeziry will compete in fencing and swimming rounds of men’s modern pentathlon. The women’s water polo team will square off against Spain in the match for the gold medal.

In athletics, Vashti Cunningham will go for gold in the women’s high jump final, while Emily Sisson, Alicia Monsoon and Karissa Schweizer will compete in women’s 10,000m final. 

American athletes will also compete at both the men’s and women’s finals for the 4x400m relay race.

With just one more day remaining after tomorrow, this will USA’s penultimate push to overtake China in the gold medals tally.
