India was off to a flying start on Day 11 of the Tokyo Olympics with the women’s hockey team beating Australia 1-0 in the quarterfinals. This was the first time in the history of the games that an Indian women’s hockey team has made it to the last four. The team will now face Argentina in the semifinals.
Other results saw Equestrian Fouaad Mirza finish a creditable 23rd after he became the first Indian to reach the final of the event. In the final, the 29-year-old incurred 12.40 penalty points for an overall 59.60 that included the points from the three rounds of qualifying events — dressage, cross country and jumping.
Discus thrower Kamalpreet Kaur also failed to win a medal after as she finished sixth with a best attempt of 63.70. She threw 61.62 in her first attempt but had a foul in the second before rain halted play. She threw 63.70 in her third attempt. American Valarie Allman clinched the gold with a first round throw of 68.98m while Kristin Pudenz (66.86m) of Germany and Cuba’s Yaime Perez (65.72m) won the silver and bronze respectively.

India will begin Day 12 with men’s hockey semi-finals against Belgium. The Manpreet Singh-led team defeated Great Britain 3-1 in the quarter-finals on Sunday to qualify to the last four of the tournament after a long gap of 49 years.
Other athletes in action will be Annu Rani, who will take part in the Javelin throw event and Tajinder Singh Toor, who will participate in the Men’s shot put qualification. Sonam Malik will also be seen in action in the Women’s 62 kg freestyle category.
