India were off to a flying start on Day 14 of the Tokyo Olympics with the men’s hockey team ending the country’s 41-year wait for a medal in the sport by defeating Germany 5-4 and winning a bronze medal. Talking about the historic win, the Indian men’s hockey coach Graham Reid said that the victory was possible because of a strong mentality.  

Another player who created history was wrestler Ravi Dahiya also bagged a silver medal in the freestyle 57kg category. Though he lost 4-7 to reigning world champion Zavur Uguev, he became the second Indian wrestler to bag a silver medal at the event. 

India also suffered a few heartbreaks. Vinesh Phogat, who was a gold medal contender, lost in the quarter-finals to Vanesa Kaladzinskaya of Belarus in the 53kg women’s freestyle wrestling event.

Deepak Punia also lost the bronze medal to San Marino’s Nazem Myles Amine in the dying seconds of the game in the men’s freestyle 86kg event. 

India, which has so far won 5 medals in Tokyo 2020, will begin Day 15 with women’s hockey bronze medal match against Great Britain. 

Other athletes in action will be golfers Diksha Dagar and Aditi Ashok. Bajrang Punia, who is a medal contender for India, will be fighting Ernazar Akmataliev in men’s freestyle 65kg round of 16.
