The USA women’s football team (USWNT) defeated Netherlands 4-2 on penalties to advance to the semifinals of the Tokyo Olympics on Friday. Megan Rapinoe and company will play Canada on Monday to secure a place in the finals. 

Rapinoe turned around and struck her iconic victory pose after scoring the winning penalty. The team players then surrounded the veteran player and the celebrations began. Netherlands and USWNT engaged in a 2-2 draw before entering the penalty shootout stage.

Team USA’s goalkeeper Alyssa Naeher saved Anieh Nouwen’s shot, handing her team a well-fought win. Netherlands’ Vivianne Miedema scored both goals for her country. She finished the Tokyo Olympics with 10 goals against her name. USA’s Lynn Williams not only assisted Mewis’ 28th-minute goal but also gave her team a lead in the 31st minute. With a victory, USWNT redeemed its early exit from the Rio Olympics in 2016.

Canada triumphed via a 4-3 win over Brazil in penalties. The teams engaged in a deadlock after 120 minutes of play.

Team USA saw some other positive results on Day 8 of the Tokyo Games. Two-time Olympic gold medalist Lilly King won a silver in the 200 breaststroke event. Her teammate, Annie Lazor, won a bronze medal. Swimmer Ryan Murphy claimed a silver in the men’s 200 backstroke. The US women’s basketball team defeated Japan 86-69 in a group game.
