Every year during the Super Bowl, heavy bucks are spent by international corporations to feature their advertisements in front of millions of people, to the point where this has become an annual culture in US inside the larger Super Bowl-related general enthusiasm. The commercials in 2021 were as expected top-notch, and featured some of the most brilliant writing and acting in the format of advertising available in current times.

1.
‘Twas the night before Super Bowl: ‘Don’t forget
the chips’ should be an annual line traditionally said from now on during the
Super Bowl chips commercials, as narrated by Marshawn Lynch of the Seattle Seahawks
and featuring several NFL players of the yesteryears, the commercial is bound
to create that classic American NFL experience with match time snacks such as
Lays, classic nachos and favoured dips.

The FritoLay commercial starts with Lynch taking
a page out of ‘Twas the night before Christmas’, a poem from 1823 about a visit
from St Nicholas, before proceeding to rhyme schemes and NFL legends in cosy settings
with bags of chips in their hands. Crisp, just like the products.

2.
Flat Matthew: Undoubtedly one of the highlights
of the 2021 Super Bowl, #flatMatthew became a meme and started doing rounds on
Twitter immediately after this commercial aired, where Matthew McConaughey is Matthew
McConaughey, except a 2D version of himself, which is until he eats a Doritos
3D. The Fritolay brand reportedly worked with Gooby, Silverstein and Partners
on the spot.

3.
Falcon and the Winter Soldier: Disney dropped
the trailer for its upcoming series, Falcon and the Winter Soldier, during the
first quarter of the game. The show will be up for streaming in Disney+ and
will be releasing on March 19, 2021. A full trailer was later on published on
YouTube and social media later on.

4.
Ford’s heartening message: American automobile
manufacturer Ford, in its commercial, did not play around with fiction or
popular culture this year, unlike several other advertisements. The car-maker
posted a commercial that could be titled as one bringing about disillusionment with
regard to the pandemic, but also certainly one highlighting being close to ones
dear ones during the trying times. Fantastically executed, the clip asks
viewers to hang on just a little bit more, before we can go back to our normal
lives.

5.
M&M, Karen – meme galore: The short but very
millennial m&m commercial which features Schitt’s Creek’s Dan Levy, has a
group of people apologising for things they have done, including a woman who
apologises to another lady for calling her ‘Karen’ and giving her a pack of m&m’s,
to which the latter replies, “But that’s my name”, only to receive another pack,
arguably a consolation prize this time.

The commercials were certainly as large scale as the contest itself. Usually, the products featuring in the advertisements appear in the market later on in the year.
