A running back (RB) is a member of an NFL team’s offensive backfield. A running back’s primary responsibilities are to receive handoffs from the quarterback in order to rush the ball, to line up as a receiver in order to catch the ball and to block. Depending on the offensive formation, there are usually one or two running backs on the field for a given play.
