A masterclass
in swing bowling from New Zealand pacer Trent Boult, along with a mix of pure
timing and brute force from Ishan Kishan powered the Mumbai Indians to
their first-ever 10-wicket win over the Chennai Super Kings in the Indian
Premier League (IPL) on Friday.

Boult
emerged with the best bowling figures of the tournament so far, taking four
wickets for 18 runs in his four overs to help restrict the Mahendra Singh Dhoni-led
side to 114 for the loss of nine wickets in the first innings.

He continued
his streak of picking wickets in the powerplay overs, he has dismissed batsmen
in the first six overs of every match except in the recent loss against Kings
XI Punjab, with the wickets of Ruturaj Gaikwad, Faf du Plessis and Ravindra Jadeja.

Boult
perfectly set up Gaiwad for an LBW in the wicket-maiden first over, swinging a
couple of deliveries away from the right-handed batsman before angling one onto
the pads.

Jasprit Bumrah
dismissed Ambati Rayudu and Narayan Jagadeesan in consecutive deliveries in the
second over. Boult then got du Plessis’s outside edge in the third over before a
false shot saw Jadeja picking out Krunal Pandya at mid-wicket in the sixth over,
reducing CSK to 21/5 before the end of the powerplay.

Speaking at
the post-match interview, the Kiwi, who was adjudged man-of-the-match said he
was “lucky to get the first over.”

“Credit to
Boom (Bumrah) and the other guys to come out and bowl as a unit. I’ve been lucky
to get the first over, if it’s going to swing here, it’s going to be up front,”
Boult said.

A gutsy innings from Sam Curran (52 from 47), who was
castled by Boult in the final delivery of the innings, helped Chennai avoid further embarrassment and took them to a three-figure total.

The defending champions made light work of the 115-run target, chasing it down in 12.2 overs courtesy a quick-fire 37-ball 67 from Kishan, who was well-supported
by South African opener Quinton de Kock (46 from 37).

Keiron Pollard, who was stand-in captain for the injured Rohit Sharma, recorded his 15th consecutive win as captain.

“I have played enough T20 cricket to know a thing or two. It was a matter of me stepping in and trying to do the best for the team and it came off tonight. Just a matter of making right decisions, and not giving them any freebies,” the Trinidadian said.

The win propels Mumbai to the top of the points table, level with the Delhi Capitals and the Royal Challengers Bangalore on 14 points each, although the defending champions boast the best net run rate.
