Tua Tagovailoa, Miami Dolphins quarterback injured in Thursday night football, is expected to be discharged from hospital and fly back to Miami with his team tonight, the Dolphins have said.

Tagovailoa was taken mid-game in an ambulance from the Paycor Stadium in Ohio to the University of Cincinnati Medical Center after he injured his head and neck while being sacked during Thursday night football against the Cincinnati Bengals.

The Dolphins said Tua was conscious and had “movement in all his extremities” as he was taken off the field on a stretcher and then to hospital.

The 24-year-old quarterback was taken off the injury list just before the Week 4 game against the Bengals. Only four days ago, playing against the Buffalo Bills last Sunday, Tua Tagovailoa hit the ground hard when he was pushed and stumbled as he attempted to walk, looking dazed.

He went off the field but returned soon and led the Dolphins to victory. His team initially said he had a head injury, but later said he had hurt his back and ankle and that caused him to stumble.

During his short break, Tua said, he passed the NFL’s concussion protocol and was allowed to return to the game.

Tua’s Week 3 injury was a major headline, with much concern over his being fit enough to play in Week 4 after the short break between the Sunday game and Thursday night football.

The quarterback went from no-show at practice on Monday to limited participation on Wednesday and was taken off the injury list just ahead of Thursday night’s game against the Bengals.

Tagovailoa event sent out a message of gratitude to his fans and team members who wished for his speedy recovery. In his message, which he posted on Twitter, the quarterback said, “I want to thank everyone for all of their prayers and support since the game last night. It was difficult to not be able to finish the game and be there with my teammates, but I am grateful for the support and care I’ve received from the Dolphins, my friends and family, and all the people who have reached out. I’m feeling much better and focused on recovering so I can get back out on the field with my teammates.”
