Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa suffered a horrific head and neck injury in the NFL 2022 Week 4 Thursday Night Football game on September 29 against the Cincinnati Bengals. He was quickly carted off the field and transported to a level 1 trauma center.

The 24-year-old was tackled by Bengals’ nose tackle Josh Tupou, and after he was sacked, he was seen putting his hands on his face in a strange manner, which has since then been reported as a ‘fencing response’. Several fans on Twitter recalled another unfortunate NFL injury that occurred to former Indianapolis Colts wide receiver Austin Collie, who had suffered a similar injury and made a similar hand signal.

Coolie, 36, suffered many injuries in his career. He suffered the injury in question in 2010 when he was tackled by two Philadelphia Eagles defensive backs and lost consciousness on the field. Coolie was unconscious for 10 minutes with his hands freezing up in a similar way to that of Tua Tagovailoa.

The former wide receiver also reacted to Tua’s injury on Thursday night against the Bengals. “Damn. Hate to see it. #tnf #MiamiDolphins #TNFonPrime,” he tweeted.

Tua Tagovailoa suffered another injury in Week 3 of the 2022 NFL season, however, still started against the Bengals on Thursday. Since his injury, the Dolphins are being criticized for their decision to start him against the Bengals, as several fans think he should have been placed under the concussion protocol. His parents were also present in the stadium to watch the game when the injury happened.

Collie, who suffered his injury that resulted in the fencing response in 2010, played only two of the eight games after that concussion. He was also 24 years old at that time, similar to that of Tua Tagovailoa. After his retirement, he started working with CognitiveFX, which is a concussion treatment center.

Collie registered 179 receptions for 1,908 yards, 16 touchdowns, 110 first downs, 2 carries for 1 yard and 1 fumble in his career.
