Tua Tagovailoa’s fifth-year option on his contract was activated, the Dolphins revealed on Monday. He will receive $23.2 million as a result of the decision, according to Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated.

After a challenging 2022 season in which he sustained multiple head injuries and spent two stints in the NFL’s concussion protocol, Tagovailoa is getting off of it. However, Miami’s choice shows that the team, in spite of the young quarterback’s injury history, is dedicated to him moving forward.

Tua Tagovailoa updated contract extension

This past season, the 25-year-old played in 13 games and completed 3,548 passes for 3,548 yards and 25 scores against just eight interceptions. Despite finishing 9-8, the Dolphins were defeated by the Bills in the wild-card round, and Tagovailoa was out due to the concussion procedure. Tagovailoa is set to become an unrestricted free agent in 2025 unless both parties consent to a contract extension by then.

Tagoviloa injury caused him to skip a few games. Tagovailoa’s season was over after he sustained a concussion on Christmas Day against the Green Bay Packers.

This anticipated action will retain Tagovailoa with the Dolphins through the 2024 season on a contract that is probably going to be in the range of $23 million.

Tagovailoa is beginning his fourth season and will earn a base wage of just over $1 million plus $3.73 million in bonuses.
