Real Madrid hosted Paris Saint-Germain at the Santiago Bernabeu for the second-leg of their UEFA Champions League Round of 16 tie.

PSG, who went into the game 1-0 having won the previous leg, dominated the ball from the beginning of the match as Real Madrid appeared to be set on playing on the counter. However, the visitors made good use of the ball resulting in an early chance for star striker Kylian Mbappe.

The Frenchman pounced on a loose ball to force a safe from Madrid keeper Thibaut Courtois minutes later, marking the start of a period of PSG pressure.

Madrid, however, produced a magnificent chance at the other end in the 25th minute but Karim Benzema was denied by a brilliant save from Donnarumma.

Less than 10 minutes later, Mbappe thought he had scored from a Nuno Mendes cut-back, but the goal was disallowed for offside.

Madrid went on to produce two good chances at the other end but paid the price when Neymar played Mbappe in behind Madrid’s backline, and the unrelenting Frenchman finished well to put the visitors up by a goal.

The score remained 1-0 to PSG at half-time.

PSG started the second-half the stronger side and Mbappe found the back of the net again in the 54th minute, only for the goal to be disallowed for offside.

While most expected the PSG onslaught to continue, Madrid had other plans.

Less than 10 minutes after Mbappe’s disallowed goal, Benzema capitalised on a mistake by Donnarumma to score an easy goal and put Madrid back into the tie.

The French maestro converted again in the 76th minute, this time assisted by the brilliant Luka Modric.

Benzema went on to complete his hattrick in spectacular fashion two minutes later as a stunned PSG looked on, and the Frenchman’s three goals, for the first time, gave Madrid the advantage in the two-legged tie.

Real Madrid looked increasingly threatening as the match entered its last 10 minutes, but PSG fought back with some heart in the dying minutes of the game.

Although PSG came close from a Lionel Messi free-kick, the Argentine magician could not convert, and the game ended 3-1 in the home side’s favour, with the aggregate score being Real Madrid 3-2 PSG.

Madrid’s win at home saw them reach the quarter-final stage of the UEFA Champions League, along with Manchester City, Liverpool, and Bayern Munich.

The remaining fixtures to determine the other quarter-final participants are scheduled for next week.
