23-time Grand Slam singles winner Serena Williams bowed out of the 2022 US Open when she was defeated by Australian star Ajla Tomljanovic on Friday night, September 2, 2022. The 40-year-old was beaten 7-5, 6(4)-7(7), 6-1 at the Flushing Meadows, which could very well be her final match at the US Open.

The defeat comes a day after Serena and her sister, Venus Williams, was knocked out of the 2022 US Open women’s doubles against Czech duo Linda Nosková and Lucie Hradecka 7-6(5), 6-4. After her singles exit on Friday, a teary Serena said she is grateful to everyone who cheered for her in her ‘incredible ride’.

“It’s been the most incredible ride and journey I’ve ever been on in my life,” Williams said.

“I’m so grateful to every single person that’s ever said, Go, Serena!’ in their life,” she continued.

Tributes poured over Serena Williams’ potential retirement from the sport and celebrities, including former players also joined the bandwagon.

“You’re literally the greatest on and off the court. Thank you for inspiring all of us to pursue our dreams. I love you little sis!!!!!!” Golf great Tiger Woods, who was present during Williams’ first-round match at the US Open earlier, posted on Twitter.

Former American First Lady, Michelle Obama also paid her tribute to Serena, congratulating her on her ‘amazing career’ and describing how lucky she has been to watch her become one of the greatest athletes of all time.A

Former American tennis star Andy Roddick also congratulated Serena on her illustrious career and said he loves her.

“I love you @serenawilliams. It’s been the pleasure of a lifetime to watch you become what you have. Can’t wait to see what you do next. Thank you my old friend,” he wrote on Twitter.
