Borussia Dortmund‘s promising young midfielder, Giovanni Reyna, left the field in tears on Friday during their Bundesliga match against VfB Stuttgart at the Mercedes-Benz Arena, which ended 2-0 in favour of the away side.
While the 19-year-old US international started the game for Dortmund, but grabbed the back of his hamstring, wincing in pain, a couple of minutes into the match. He limped off in tears six minutes later, adding yet another injury to a season plagued by several. The nature of Reyna’s injury, or its extent, was not clear at the time of writing this.

Reyna’s troubles began last September during the USMNT‘s first 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifier match against El Salvador. In that fateful match, the 19-year-old suffered a major hamstring injury that kept him out of action for five whole months.
The youngster returned to the Dortmund line-up at the start of February this year, but his return was a short-lived one as he injured himself again, which kept him on the sidelines for two more weeks.
However, Reyna returned to fitness prior to the USMNT’s World Cup qualifiers last month that secured the team’s spot in the finals in Qatar.

Reyna, till date, has missed more than 100 days of this season due to injuries, and his latest one perhaps hints at an injury-hit year that will see the promising youngster miss out on the 2022 FIFA World Cup in December.
That being said, with Dortmund hot on the heels of Bundesliga leaders Bayern Munich, and the USMNT hoping to make a statement at the World Cup, both teams will be hoping against hope that Reyna’s injury is a short one.
