Vida Blue, a flamethrowing left-hander and an important member of the Oakland Athletics during their World Series three-peat from 1972-74 died on Saturday. He became the youngest MVP in AL/NL history in 1971. He was 73.

“There are few players with a more decorated career than Vida Blue,” the A’s said in a statement.

Vida Blue was married to Peggy Shannon. The two got married on September 24, 1989, on the mound and Candlestick Park, but they got divorced in 1996 She was 31 years old when she married Vida. Career

Blue was selected by the Kansas City A’s in the second round of the 1967 MLB Draft out of De Soto High School in northwestern Louisiana. In 1969, he made his debut at the age of 19, the franchise’s second year after moving to Oakland.

He played only 19 games (10 starts) for the A’s during his first two seasons, his dominance after being called up in September 1970 served as a preview of what was to come.
Blue was the first of only five pitchers in major league history to start the All-Star Game for both the American League in 1971 and the National League in 1978.

During his 17-year-long career, Blue played for the Oakland Athletics (1969-1977), San Francisco Giants (1978-1981, 1985-1986), and Kansas City Royals (1982-1983).
In 1971, he won the AL Cy Young and MVP Products Awards after going 24-8 with a 1.82 ERA and 201 strikeouts in more than 312 innings.
