Kai Spears and Alabama athletics director Greg Byrne slammed the New York Times report that said the player was involved in Jamea Harris’ shooting along with Brandon Miller, Jaden Bradley and Darius Miles in January.

The NY Times reported that Spears was present at the location, near the school’s Tuscaloosa campus, when Harris was shot.

However, Bryne tweeted that the the report is false.

“Last night, an inaccurate report was published about Kai Spears, one of our student-athletes, being present at the time of the incident. This is untrue,” Byrne said in a statement shared to Twitter Thursday.

“Some inaccurate narratives have been reported …that display an unfortunate disregard of the facts. We ask all to exercise careful due diligence before reporting on this sensitive situation.”

Spears and his father and Marshall athletic director Christian Spears said that the report was ‘100% inaccurate and the writer had complete disregard for the truth’.

“I am trying to process and cope with these false statements that somehow have been published and then seen by so many. So thankful to Alabama Athletics for refuting it on my behalf. More than anything… I remain completely heartbroken by the tragic death that occurred that night,” the player said.

As per the surveillance video of the incident, two players were in a car during the crossfire that killed Jamea Harris. Brandon Miller has been recognized as one player. Jaden Bradley and Darius Miles are the other two.

The Alabama athletic department also refuted the report, saying, “Your story is inaccurate. Based on the information we have, there were no current student-athletes present at the scene other than Brandon Miller and Jaden Bradley, who are both fully cooperating witnesses. From the outset, UA Athletics has fully cooperated with law enforcement and supported their investigation.”
