Bajrang Punia brought out his best self at the Commonwealth Games 2022 on August 5, when he defeated George Ramm of England 10-0 to qualify for the final of men’s 65kg wrestling. The victory also ensured at least a silver medal for the Indian star wrestler at the mega event, who has often been dubbed as one of India’s best in the sport.

The 28-year-old began the day positively when he beat Lowe Bingham of Nauru 4-0 in the pre-quarterfinals and advanced to the quarterfinals. He continued his impressive performance against Jean Guyliane Joris Bandou of Mauritius in the quarters, defeating him 6-0 to reach the semifinals.

However, it was at the semifinals when Punia brought out his best self, defeating Englishman George Ramm 10-0 in under one minute and making his way to the final. The technical superiority victory was one of the highlights of Indian wrestling supremacy on the world stage and Bajrang Punia looked full of confidence when he achieved it.

Apart from Bajrang Punia, other Indian wrestlers like Sakshi Malik, Anshu Malik, Deepak Punia, Divya Kakran and Mohit Grewal have ensured medals for the country.

Bajrang was also part of the Indian contingent at the Tokyo Olympics 2020, where he won the bronze medal by defeating Daulet Niyazbekov of Kazakhstan. He has also won two Commonwealth Games medals before the 2022 edition when he won the silver and gold medals at the 2014 and 2018 editions respectively.

As he looks forward to clinching his second CWG gold medal in Birmingham, it is also the second time he will be facing a Canadian wrestler in the final, having been beaten by David Tremblay in the 2014 edition of the mega event.

Bajrang Punia will now face Lachlan McNeil of Canada in the final of men’s 65kg freestyle wrestling, which is also slated to take place on Friday, August 5 at the Coventry Arena.
