19-year-old Carlos Alcaraz touched a new milestone on Wednesday night when he defeated Jannik Sinner of Italy in the quarterfinal of the 2022 US Open. The Spaniard beat Sinner 3-6, 7(9)-6(7), 7(7)-6(0), 5-7, 3-6 at the Flushing Meadows in a five-hour 15 minutes long match.

Alcaraz, the world no. 4, will now face American Frances Tiafoe in the semifinal and will be hoping to replicate his winning performance once again to advance to the final. His quarterfinal match against Sinner was also the second longest match in the history of the US Open, something that won the hearts of many fans throughout the world.

The Spanish teenager began the match brightly as he claimed the opening set, however, Sinner won the second set. The Italian youngster saved four set points to force a tiebreaker at 5-6. Sinner managed to win the set as Alcaraz registered 16 winners and as many as five unforced errors but could not claim the second set.

The third set offered even more competition at the Flushing Meadows but Sinner managed to claim it once again. As the sets advanced, the competition between the two youngsters became more intense. In the fourth and fifth sets, Alcaraz made a comeback as he claimed two back-to-back sets to clinch the victory.

The match went on for five hours and 15 minutes and became the second-longest match in the history of the US Open, following the five-hour 26 minutes semifinal match in the 1992 edition between Stefan Edberg of Sweden and Michael Chang of the United States in the top spot.

Alcaraz has been in impressive form in the ongoing year. He also began his US Open campaign brightly by defeating Sebastian Baez of Argentina in the first round, before defeating Federico Coria of Argentina, Jenson Brooksby of America, and Marin Cilic of Croatia in the second, third and round of 16 respectively.
