Cristiano Ronaldo has finally managed to score his first goal of the 2022-23 season, which is also his first Europa League goal ever, against Moldovan club, Sheriff. Ronaldo, 37, is for the first time in his career playing in the second flight of European club competitions with Manchester United after the latter failed to secure a Champions League berth after finishing sixth on the the 2021-22 Premier League table.

Ronaldo’s strike came in the 39th minute of the match. The first goal was scored by Jadon Sancho at the 17th minute. With his strike, the Portuguese goal machine has now scored 699 club goals in his glittering career. OptaJoe reports that he has now scored against 124 clubs across all competitions.

Before the 2022-23 season began, CR7 was looking for a way out of Manchester United in order to ply his trade in the Champions League, a competition where he holds multiple records, including the top scorer and top assist-provider. 

The former Real Madrid player was linked with Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund, Napoli, Chelsea, as well as Atletico Madrid, but could not force a move away from United, with whom he still has a year left on his contract. It remains to be seen whether Ronaldo manages to secure a move away from United in the mid-season transfer window.

This was United’s second Europa League match of the season. The Red Devils lost their first match to Real Sociedad and are currently second on the Group E table. The 13-time Premier League winners, who are currently sixth on the league table, will next face city rivals Manchester City on October 2. Their next Europa League match, against Cypriot club AC Omonia, is scheduled for October 6.
