Mahomes pulled off a sidearm throw for his first touchdown pass on Thursday. Scrambling to his right, the quarterback was nearly sacked by Chargers linebacker Drue Tranquill. However, he kept the ball alive and snapped a sidearm throw, after a pump fake, at  Jerick McKinnon

With that TD pass, Mahomes completed eight passes in the game, giving him 1,588 career completions. He moved past QB Alex Smith (1,587) for the third-most completions in franchise history.

“They came in last year and beat us. They’re going to be ready to go. They’ve won here. They’re not going to be scared to come in and play. We have to have a better mindset that we have to play well from the start,” Mahomes said ahead of the game.

The Chiefs started without kicker Harrison Butker, who sprained his ankle on a kickoff in Arizona, forcing safety Eric Reid to handle most of the kicking duties the rest of the way. They signed former Jets kicker Matt Ammendola to their practice squad and could elevate him for the game, but he would have little practice time with the rest of the kicking unit.
