Poland and Barcelona striker Robert Lewandowski scored his first FIFA World Cup during the Group C encounter between Poland and Saudi Arabia on Saturday at the Education City Stadium in Al Rayyan, Qatar

Watch the goal here.

Lewandowski’s goal gave Poland a 2-0 lead in the match just at the wake of extra time. Saudi Arabia are unlikely to make a comeback from here as very little time remains for Herve Renard’s man to even clinch a point from here with a draw.

The 34-year-old Polish striker missed a glorious opportunity from the spot in the match against Mexico after his shot was stopped by the Mexican goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa is a stunning reaction save. After the draw against Mexico, Poland had to win the match against Saudi Arabi on Saturday to keep any hopes of qualifying for the knockout stages of the tournament alive.

Saudi Arabia eventually could not make a comeback as the match ended in 2-0 defeat for them. The win today, on top of the draw against Mexico, means that Poland are going to the Round of 16 of the FIFA World Cup 2022 with one match against Argentina to go.

This is the first time that the country will push to the knockout stages of the World Cup. It is a great result for Poland especially after getting eliminated by finishing bottom of the Group in the FIFA World Cup 2018 in Russia.

A lot of hope will rest on the Barcelona striker as the matches will get tougher in the knockout stages and he will be required to turn up in peak form to sail the Polish hopes through.

Can he do it? Only time will tell.
