England were put on the front foot in the opening Test against India by their captain Joe Root and Ben Stokes, as they finished 555/8 at stumps on Day 2. Root hogged all the limelight with his sublime double century, as Stokes supported him ably as they strung together a 124-run partnership to leave the Indian bowling attack clueless. But it was Rohit Sharma’s antics during the fag end of the day that left cricketers, commentators and fans talking.

Sharma dropped Dominic Bess on 19 in the 175th over of the England innings off Washington Sundar, who couldn’t help but laugh at the incident.

However, it was Ben Stokes’ reaction to the dropped-catch that highlighted how easy the catch was.

Commentators, too, chimed in and said that they couldn’t believe what had transpired. Sharma’s lackadaisical effort prompted an unwarranted comment from former England international Michael Vaughan.

Replays showed Sharma sharing a light laugh with Kohli and Sundar after the dropped catch, which left the commentators unimpressed. While Sunil Gavaskar said that had he been in his place, he wouldn’t be laughing, Murali Karthik said it is disheartening for the bowler to see one of the safest hands drop a dolly.

On the match front, Indian bowlers would be aiming to wrap up the English tail early on Day three, giving the Indian batsmen some time to spend in the middle and give the visitors a tough fight.
