Weightlifter Mirabai Chanu won the 1st Gold for India at Commonwealth Games 2022 after putting up a commanding show in the women’s 49 kg weightlifting final on Saturday. The 27-year-old lifted 84kg (snatch) and 88kg in her first and second attempt, respectively. She then attempted to lift 90kg but unsuccessful. Chanu shattered the Games record in women’s weightlifting.

Mauritian weightlifter Marie Hanitra Roilya Ranaivosoa 172kg (76kg+96kg) won the silver while Hannah Kaminski of Canada 171 kg (74kg+97kg) won bronze.

This is Chanu’s third successive CWG medal. The weightlifter won the silver medal in the 2014 event before clinching the gold in 2018. Both of these were won in the 48kg category.

Chanu won the silver medal in the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. She lifted110kg in her first attempt and also cleared 115kg in her second attempt in the 49kg category at the event. She, however, missed the 117kg in the third attempt and settled for silver.

“There is not much competition in CWG, but that doesn’t man there is no competition. I have to give my best performance keeping in mind the future tournaments,” she had told during a candid chat at Netaji Subhas National Institute of Sports (NIS) in June. 

Earlier in the day, weightlifter Sanket Mahadev Sargar won a silver medal in men’s 55kg category. The 21-year-old lifted a total of 248kg (113kg 135kg) to come second. 

“There were no errors committed during the lift. I felt a sudden load on my right elbow so I couldn’t control it and there were two clicks I heard,” Sargar said at the mixed zone.

Meanwhile, Indian weightlifter Gururaj Poojary won a bronze medal in the Men’s 61 Kg weight category. He lifted a total of 269 Kgs.
