Sunil Gavaskar has decided to throw his weight behind Virat Kohli as the former Indian skipper is being scrutinised for his purple run during the ODI series against West Indies. Kohli has scored eight and 18 runs in the two matches and is still struggling to score his much-awaited 71st international century. India have taken an unassailable 2-0 lead and will look to clean sweep with a win on Friday.

Kohli’s form has been under the scanner since the past year. He scored 3,227 international runs in 2020 and 536 in 2021. The 33-year-old has not scored a century since 2019.

Virat Kohli stepped down as India’s T20I and Test captain. He was sacked from the position in the ODIs. The latest setback for him came during the South Africa tour, where the Men in Blue were clean sweeped by the hosts in ODIs.

He has failed to fire for India against West Indies when other batsmen are scoring plenty runs. Amid all the scrutiny, Sunil Gavaskar backed the former Royal Challengers Bangalore skipper, reminding his critics that Kohli scored back-to-back half-centuries in South Africa. The India legend further gave an one-word verdict on what Kohli is missing.

Speaking to Star Sports ahead of the 3rd ODI between the West Indies and hosts India, Gavaskar said that Kohli needs a bit of luck.

“Luck (What is Kohli missing?). Every batter needs a bit of luck. Every batter needs a situation where he plays and misses an edge. Every batter needs a situation where he edges the ball and the catch is dropped or the ball falls short of the fielder,” Gavaskar said.

“He hasn’t quite had the best of luck in the last so many matches. Don’t forget, he got fifties in South Africa,” he added.
