Arsenal against Tottenham is one of football’s fiercest rivalries. The two teams, located four miles apart in North London, are meeting for the 191st time at the opening fixture of match week nine on Saturday at the Emirates Stadium, Arsenal’s home ground.

The North London Derby has been witness to many memorable moments over the years. In the Premier League era, perhaps the most memorable, especially for Arsenal fans, was in 2003-04 the famed Arsenal Invincibles won the PL at the White Hart Lane on April 25, 2004.

Things were heated up at White Hart Lane on that day. The referees, weary that chaos might break out, explicitly warned Arsenal star Thiery Henry at the tunnel that he should not celebrate in front of the 35,000-strong crowd if he scores.

Henry, however, lived up to being a true gunner and celebrated in front of the Tottenham after a Patrick Viera goal that came from a Thiery Henry run. The visitors extended their lead when after 30 odd minutes Robert Pires scored the second for Arsenal.

It was a well-worked play that saw Dennis Bergkamp sliding the ball to Pires who then placed it into the Tottenham goal.  The stage was set for the Gunners to win the Premier League.

However, the hosts were not ready to let things slip as yet. Jamie Redknapp opened the scoring for the Lillywhites with a terrific strike from range. Then in stoppage time, Arsenal goalkeeper Jens Lehman fouled Robbie Keane giving the host a penalty. Keane took it and Lehman had no chance of stopping the shot.

The thrilling contest between the North London rivals ended 2-2 and Arsenal still went on to win the League at the Lane.

The match has become a dark spot in Tottenham’s history. The Gunners have come up with a chant called: “we won the league at the shit hart lane”.
