Detroit Lions, the NFL franchise, on Tuesday, reached an agreement to sign Chicago Bears free agent running back David Montgomery, multiple reports claim. The Lions have reportedly reached an agreement with Montgomery to sign a three-year deal worth $18 million and it will become official at 4 pm on Wednesday.
The signing of Montgomery means that Jamaal Williams, the Lions running back, will have to find a new team.
Many clubs are reportedly in the foray for the 27-year-old and he will have a lot of options in the ongoing free agency to choose his future team. In the 2022 season with the Lions, Williams led them with 1066 rushing yards and scored 17 rushing touchdowns.
The Lions fans are also in love with Williams and they celebrated him when he became the first Lions player to top 1000 yards rushing since Reggie Bush in 2013. He also broke the franchise’s highest single-season touchdown record held by Bary Sanders.
On the back of a strong season, the running back had said earlier that he hoped to sign a long-term contract with the team. The two sides met and discussed a new contract earlier this month during the NFL combine.
Now with the Lions out of the picture, reports say that New York Jets are ‘very interested’ and the Cincinnati Bengals are also in the race for Williams.
Tyler Dunne has claimed that Buffalo Bills, Carolina Panthers, and Chicago Bears are also interested in signing Williams in this free agency. It remains to be still seen which team puts forth an acceptable deal with the running back, but a move would be imminent.
In another trading news from Tuesday, Indianapolis Colts’ Stephon Gilmore moved to the Dallas Cowboys in a one-year $11.9 million deal.
