Wide receiver Chris Godwin is currently recovering from a torn ACL and a sprained MCL. Head coach Todd Bowles was asked about Godwin’s injury after the Buccaneers’s last pre-season game of the upcoming NFL season, against the Indianapolis Colts.

Bowles said,”He’s been working out every day. He’s one of the hardest workers on the team. It’s going to be hard to try to hold him back if he’s healthy.”

Who is Chris Godwin?

Chris Godwin is an American football player who plays for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the National Football League. He was drafted by the Bucs in the third round of the 2017 NFL Draft.

Godwin was born on February 27, 1996 in Middletown city in Delaware state and attended the Middletown High School. As a senior, he recorded 1,150 yards and 16 touchdown receptions. He committed to play for the Penn State University Nittany Lions Football Team after finishing high school.

College Career: –

Godwin started all thirteen games for his college team in his freshman year, totaling 338 yards on 26 receptions.  emerged as a leading wide receiver during his sophomore season, accumulating 1,101 yards and five touchdowns and had at least 100 yards receiving in five games during that season. 

NFL Career: –

The Buccaneers selected Godwin in the third round with the 84th overall pick in the 2017 NFL draft. 

In a 34-17 loss to the Minnesota Vikings in Week 3 of his debut season, he had his first three career receptions for 44 yards. He had 68 yards on five receptions in a 15-10 win over the New York Jets in Week 10. Godwin caught nine passes for 111 yards and a touchdown in the Buccaneers’ 31-24 win over the New Orleans Saints in the regular season finale, earning him NFC Offensive Player of the Week honors. Godwin had 34 receptions for 525 yards and one touchdown as a rookie.

Godwin had a receiving touchdown in each of the first three games of the 2018 season, against the New Orleans Saints, Philadelphia Eagles, and Pittsburgh Steelers. Godwin finished his second season with 59 receptions for 842 yards and seven touchdowns.

Godwin finished his third season with 86 receptions for 1,333 yards and nine touchdowns, setting new career highs in receptions, receiving yards, and touchdowns. He was named to the season Pro Bowl and was named NFC Offensive Player of the Year for his performance against the Atlanta Falcons in Week 12. In that game, he had a career-long 71-yard touchdown reception on his way to a career-high 184 yards and two touchdowns in his team’s 35-22 victory.

As Tom Brady became the quarterback of the Buccaneers in the 2020 season, he switched his jersey number to 14 from 12. Godwin had 65 receptions for 840 yards and seven TDs in 12 regular season games that year. However, in the postseason, the player shined. Godwin had five catches for 79 yards and his first playoff touchdown against the Washington Football Team in the Wild Card Round of the 2020-21 NFL playoffs.  In a 30-20 road victory over the Saints in the Divisional Round, he was limited to four catches for 34 yards.  Godwin had five catches for 110 yards and a six-yard rush in the NFC Championship game against the Green Bay Packers, which the Buccaneers won 31-26 on the road to advance to Super Bowl LV.  During the Super Bowl, he had two catches for nine yards as the Buccaneers defeated the Chiefs 31-9.

Godwin was given the franchise tag (worth $15.9 million) by the Buccaneers on March 9, 2021, ahead of the upcoming NFL Season. 

Godwin tore his ACL and sprained his MCL in the Buccaneers’ Week 15, 9-0 shutout loss to the New Orleans Saints on December 19, 2021, ending his season prematurely. Godwin finished the season with 98 receptions for 1,103 yards and five touchdowns, as well as four carries for 21 yards and a touchdown.

Godwin was given the franchise tag yet again by the Buccaneers on March 9, 2022. A week later, Godwin and the Buccaneers agreed to a three-year, $60 million contract, with a $40 million signing bonus.
