Courtland Sutton is an American football wide receiver and currently plies his trade in the NFL with the Denver Broncos. He was signed by the Broncos in the 2018 NFL Draft when they drafted him in the 2nd round as the 40th overall pick.

Who is Courtland Sutton?

Courtland Sutton was born on October 10, 1995 in Brenham, Texas. He did his high schooling at Brenham High School there, graduating from Brenham as a 3 star recruit and having offers from BYU, Colorado, SMU and Rice to choose from.

He eventually chose to commit to SMU and play his college football for the SMU Mustangs football team from 2014-17. In his freshman year, he suffered an injury after just 2 games, forcing him to take a medical redshirt. The following year, 2015, as a redshirt freshman, he started all 12 games for the Mustangs and recorded 49 receptions for 862 yards and nine touchdowns. In his sophomore year, 2016, he was once again a perennial starter, making 76 receptions for 1,246 yards and 10 touchdowns.

Sutton decided to enter the NFL Draft following his Junior year though- declaring for the 2018 NFL Draft. The Denver Broncos made him a 2nd round selection as the 40th overall pick, and 3rd wide receiver to be selected in that year’s draft. 

He made his professional and NFL debut in a 27-24 season opening victory against the Seattle Seahawks, recording two receptions for 45 yards. He featured in 16 games for the Broncos that year, 9 of them starts, and finished with 42 receptions for 704 yards and four touchdowns. In the following season, Sutton started 14 of the 16 games he played in, and recorded 72 receptions for 1,112 receiving yards and six receiving touchdowns. He became the youngest Broncos wide receiver to get a Pro Bowl call that season, breaking Demaryius Thomas’ record.

The 2020 season was a write-off for Sutton as he suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in Week 2 that ended his season even before it had kicked off. However, in November 2021, the Broncos put their faith in Sutton and rewarded his performances with a 4-year contract extension worth $60 million, which shall see him stay with the Broncos until 2025.
