Daniel Galán is a Columbian tennis player who recently beat World No. 4 Stefanos Tsitsipas in a stunning upset at the ongoing US Open. 

Playing in the main draw for the first time, Galan beat Tsitsipas  6-0, 6-1, 3-6, 7-5, winning the game on the ninth match point.

Who is Daniel Galan?

Daniel Elahi Galán was born on June 18, 1996 in Bucaramanga, Colombia. Currently, he the No. 1 player in Colombia. 

Prior to his match with Tsitsipas, Galan had reached a career-high ATP singles ranking of No. 94 on August 22, 2022. His career-high in the ATP doubles ranking was achieved in 2018, where he was placed at No. 305. 

In 2015, he made his ATP debut at the Claro Open Colombia, defeating Pere Riba in the first round.

Five years later in 2020, he made his first appearance at a Grand Slam at the French Open. He went on to face Novak Djokovic in his third round match but lost in straight sets, 6-0, 6-3, 6-2.

He qualified for the 2020 Olympics but was defeated by the at the time World No. 5 Alexander Zverev in the second round.

In 2021, he attended the Miami open reaching his best third round in the Masters 1000 and reached his at the time career high seed placement of World No 110 on April 5 2021.

After missing out on three major events, Galan returned to attend the 2022 Wimbledon Championship, reaching the second round after defeating Dominik Koepfer. He managed to make it into the third round after his opponent pulled out due to testing positive for COVID-19.

Galan grew up being coached by his father Santos Galan. The rest of his family, including his mother Doris Galan, brothers Sat and Xando Galan and his sister Rocio all played tennis professionally.
