Sebastian Villa, winger for Boca Juniors, has been suspended by the Argentine club following his conviction for violence against his ex-girlfriend Daniela Cortes.

Villa, a Columbia national, received a two-year and one-month prison sentence on Friday.

“As of now (Villa) will not take part in matches involving the first men’s soccer team,” the club said in a statement late on Friday.

Daniela Cortes, who is also Colombian, did not personally participate in the trial but provided her testimony via Zoom.

During her testimony, Cortes revealed that the relationship problems began when Villa joined Boca Juniors in 2018. She stated that he started drinking alcohol and becoming increasingly violent towards her.

Describing one incident of aggression, Cortes said, “He hits me on the forehead, he kicks me in the stomach, in the leg, in the thigh.”

After the attacks, Cortes returned to her country and made a public complaint about the violence she had experienced. She expressed fear for her family and her daughter’s safety. Currently, Cortes works in business administration and investing, as indicated on her Instagram profile.
