The Golden Spikes Award, which recognizes the nation’s greatest amateur baseball player, was presented to LSU center fielder Dylan Crews on Sunday.

Crews led the Tigers to the Men’s College World Series finals and was named the Southeastern Conference Player of the Year for the second consecutive season. He is a national leader in many offensive statistics. He leads the league in runs scored (94), on-base percentage (.562), hits (104), and batting average (.418).

Crews is the second LSU player to earn a Golden Spikes award and the 10th overall from the Southeastern Conference. Ben McDonald of the Tigers won the honor in 1989.

“Dylan Crews has been one of the nation’s best college baseball players since he arrived at LSU in 2021,” USA Baseball executive director and CEO Paul Seiler said. “His extraordinary 2023 season, in addition to his generous charitable work off the baseball field, make him an extremely worthy winner of this award.”

Three of the 44 prior Golden Spikes winners went on to win the Cy Young Award, three were named Most Valuable Players, and 20 players or managers were chosen for at least one All-Star team.

The winner was chosen by a vote by members of the national baseball media, certain professionals in baseball, USA Baseball employees, and past winners.

Crews is anticipated to go in the top five picks—possibly even No. 1—in this year’s MLB draft, which will start on July 9. For the second time in the last three years, the Pirates have the first overall pick.
