Ed Reed, the 44-year-old Super Bowl Champion agreed to take over as the next head football coach at Bethune-Cookman team, the university announced on Tuesday. This will be the first head coaching position for Reed.

Who is Ed Reed?

Ed Reed was born on September 11, 1978, in St. Rose, Louisiana, United States. He studied at Destrehan High School in Destrehan, Louisiana. Reed was an all-state selection at defensive back and as a kick returner with the Fighting Wildcats football team. He was also New Orleans Times-Picayune District Most Valuable Defensive Player.

Reed got an athletic scholarship to attend the University of Miami, where he played defensive back for coach Butch Davis and coach Larry Coker’s Miami Hurricanes football teams from 1997 to 2001. Reed was also a  member of the Hurricane’s 2001 National Championship team.

He entered the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2019. Super Bowl 47 Champion safety, Ed Reed remained a two-time All-American college football star for the University of Miami, where he won a National Championship. Later, he was taken by the Baltimore Ravens in the first round of the 2002 NFL Draft.

Out of 12 NFL seasons he played in all, 11 were with the Baltimore Ravens. These seasons accumulated many accolades including Defensive Player of the Year in 2004, Pro Bowler nine times, and All-Pro eight times. The 44-year-old footballer is considered among the best safeties in the history of the sport.

Reed set up the Ed Reed Eye of the Hurricane Foundation for helping the needy families of Booker T and The Seed School of MD with full Thanksgiving meals in their homes, fitness days and holiday gifts. He also built a park in his hometown of St. Rose, Louisiana, outside New Orleans.
