On September 30 in Las Vegas, Canelo Alvarez will fight one of the Charlo brothers. But in a shocking revelation on Friday, Jermell—not Jermall as everyone had assumed—will be his opponent in a contest of uncontested champions.
Alvarez revealed the unexpected change on Friday via his Twitter account.
According to sources who spoke to ESPN, Premier Boxing Champions presented Alvarez with Jermall Charlo as their initial choice. Jermall, who hasn’t fought in over two years, claimed he needs more time to be in condition.

Elite boxer Jermall Charlo (32-0, 22 KOs) was in the running for the Canelo assignment in May when Alvarez chose Bivol.
But Charlo hasn’t fought since June 2021, when he defeated Juan Macias Montiel through unanimous decision. Mauricio Sulaiman, president of the WBC, stated last month that Charlo’s idleness is related to his mental condition. Former champion at 154 pounds, Charlo has never faced opponents heavier than 160 pounds.
His twin brother, Jermell Charlo, is the undisputed junior middleweight champion. Both Charlos are advised by Al Haymon.

Jermell Charlo raised his hand and pushed his brother aside to go against Alvarez in 2022, the year he became the undisputed super welterweight champion. He will increase his weight for the fight from 154 to 168 pounds.
Errol Spence Jr. was another candidate, but on July 29 in Las Vegas, he’ll square off against Terence Crawford first.
After defeating Brian Castano in May 2022, Jermell Charlo (35-1-1, 19 KOs), 33, was rumored to be planning a huge bout with Australian Tim Tszyu. He will now compete against boxing’s top star for what could be his largest paycheck to date.
