Liverpool striker Darwin Nunez was sent off the field vs Crystal Palace for a headbutt on defender Joachim Andersen at the Anfield Stadium on Monday. The match ended in a 1-1 draw. 

 Luis Díaz scored for a 10-man Liverpool after Wilfred Zaha gave Palace the lead in the 32nd minute.

In his first competitive start for Liverpool, Núñez lost control after jostling with Andersen and thrust his head into the face of the Palace defender, earning the Uruguay striker a straight red card.

Who is Joachim Andersen?

Born in Solrød Strand, Denmark, Joachim Anderson is a Danish defender who plays for Premier League club Crystal Palace. He is 26 years old. 

He started playing football at the age of four for local club Greve Fodbold. After playing there until 2009, Anderson joined Copenhagen’s academy before leaving for Midtjylland.

He made his Midtjylland in 2013. After trials, Anderson was selected for a youth contract with FC Twente. The defender then played for Sampdoria, Ligue 1 giants Lyon. He entered the Premier League on a loan move with Fulham. He joined Crystal Palace last year. 

In his professional career, Joachim Andersen has scored six goals. 

Joachim Andersen represented Denmark at U16, U17, U19, U20, and U21 levels before he was called up to the senior team for matches against Kosovo and Switzerland in March 2019. Months later, in October, he earned his national team debut vs Luxembourg. Denmark won the match 4-0.

On 25 May 2021, Andersen was included in the squad for UEFA Euro 2020.

After Crystal Palace’s loss against Arsenal in their Premier League 2022/23 curtain raiser, Anderson said, “It’s a little bit the same story as last season. We played well but we didn’t win.”

“We need to be better in taking our chances. When we had good periods we missed a little bit of that killer instinct, in the last action, in our own box, in their box.”
