Kyrie Irving was suspended by the Brooklyn Nets for at least five games on Thursday without pay after they were outraged by his repeated refusal to “unequivocally say he has no antisemitic beliefs.”

The Brooklyn Nets stated that Irving is “currently unfit to be associated with the Brooklyn Nets” after Irving refused to express regret for posting a link to an anti-Semitic piece on his Twitter feed, as demanded by NBA Commissioner Adam Silver.

“We were dismayed today, when given an opportunity in a media session, that Kyrie refused to unequivocally say he has no antisemitic beliefs, nor acknowledge specific hateful material in the film. This was not the first time he had the opportunity — but failed — to clarify,” the Nets noted in a statement.

“Such failure to disavow antisemitism when given a clear opportunity to do so is deeply disturbing, is against the values of our organization, and constitutes conduct detrimental to the team. Accordingly, we are of the view that he is currently unfit to be associated with the Brooklyn Nets,” the statement added.

Irving’s post-practice interview on Thursday morning made it evident that not much had changed despite the Nets’ claims that they made several attempts in recent days to assist Irving in comprehending the harm and danger of his remarks and behaviour.
