Marcell Ozuna of the Atlanta Braves, was detained by Norcross police on suspicion of DUI and failure to maintain lane. At 4:39 on Friday morning, the 31-year-old was arrested and sent to the Gwinnett County Jail. Additionally, Ozuna was detained and charged with felony assault last year after Sandy Springs police said they saw him choke his wife. After serving a suspension, he rejoined the Braves for this season.

Who is Marcell Ozuna ?

Marcell Ozuna is an Dominican baseball outfielder for the Atlanta Braves of the Major League Baseball (MLB). Born on November 12, 1990, Marcell Ozuna Idelfonso was born in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. He has played for Miami Marlins (2013-2017) and St. Louis Cardinals (2018-2019), before playing from the Braves since 2020.

The Miami Marlins (then Florida Marlins) signed Ozuna as an international free agent with a $49,000 bonus on February 15, 2008. He participated in 63 games with the Dominican Summer League (DSL) Marlins that season, hitting.279 with six home runs, 43 RBIs, and eight stolen bases. He played for the GCL Marlins in 2009 and hit.313 with five home runs and 39 RBIs in 55 games.

He gradually climbed up the ranks, playing in Class A South Atlantic League’s Greensboro Grasshoppers in 2010. For the 2012 season, Ozuna moved up to Jupiter Hammerheads of the Class A-Advanced Florida State League. On November 20, 2012, Ozuna was added to the Marlins’ 40-man roster. Ozuna started the 2013 season with Jupiter, but after four games, he was promoted to the Class AA Southern League’s Jacksonville Suns.

On April 30, 2013, Ozuna made his major league debut and got his first hit of the season, a single against New York Mets pitcher Jeremy Hefner. In his fifth game, he blasted a solo home run off Philadelphia Phillies pitcher Cole Hamels, becoming the player’s first career home run hitter, RBI, and run scorer.

Ozuna represented the Marlins in 153 games in 2014, appearing in all of them and batting.269 with 23 home runs and 85 RBIs. He tied a team record on September 11, 2014, by hitting home runs in four straight games. 

The Marlins got a number of trade proposals for him over the offseason, but he returned to the team for the 2016 campaign and was put into the number-two spot in the order. In the 2017 MLB All-Star Game, Ozuna was selected as the NL’s (National League) starting pitcher.

The Cardinals and Ozuna agreed to a $9 million, one-year deal on January 12, 2018, it was revealed. In a 3-2 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates on June 2, 2018, Ozuna hit his 100th career home run off Chad Kuhl. It was also his first home run at Busch Stadium while playing for the St. Louis Cardinals. Ozuna played in 148 games and concluded his debut year in St. Louis batting .280 with 23 home runs and 88 RBIs.

Ozuna agreed to a $18 million, one-year deal with the Atlanta Braves on January 21, 2020. He hit 1,000 hits in his MLB career on September 1 and became the first player in the National League to blast three home runs in a single game at Fenway Park.

Ozuna re-signed with the Braves on February 5, 2021, to a four-year, $64 million contract. Due to charges of domestic abuse, Ozuna was placed on administrative leave on September 9. Ozuna was consequently given a 20-game suspension, which he served during the 2021 campaign.

Ozuna is married to Genesis Guzman. The couple has three children. Pablo Ozuna, a former MLB player, is his cousin.
