Tight End Mark Andrews injured his right shoulder against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Week 8 of the 2022 NFL season. He injured his shoulder on a 6-yard reception from QB Lamar Jackson with 11:25 remaining in the second quarter. The player then went off the field, holding his shoulder, and was later listed as questionable to return.

Who is Mark Andrews?

Mark Andrews is an American football tight end who plays for the Baltimore Ravens in the National Football League (NFL). He was signed in the third round of the 2018 NFL Draft as the 86th pick overall. 

Andrews was born on 6th September 1995 in Scottsdale Arizona, and was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes at the age of 9. The disease hasn’t hindered him in any way throughout his career so far. After attending Desert Mountain High School in Scottsdale, Arizona where he had already shown solid signs of excelling in football, he committed to the University of Oklahoma to play his football for the Oklahoma Sooners.

He enjoyed a fruitful spell playing for the Sooners. After redshirting his freshman year in 2014, he played all 13 games, starting one of those, in 2015 and made 19 receptions for 318 yards and seven touchdowns. He picked up further in 2016, starting 11 of 13 games, in which he recorded 31 receptions for 489 yards and seven touchdowns. He was the recipient of the 2017 John Mackey Award for his performances that year. In early January 2018, he announced that he would forgo his senior year at Oklahoma to declare for the 2018 NFL Draft. 

He attended the NFL Combine in Indianapolis that spring where his solid performances saw him being projected as a second-round pick by draft experts. The Ravens promptly swooped for his signature tying him down with a four-year contract worth $3.45 million, including an $836,000 signing bonus. 

He started his career in the NFL sitting at fourth in the pecking order of tight ends in the Ravens’ camp. He made his debut in the season opener against the Buffalo Bills and contributed to a 47-3 victory with three receptions for 31 yards. He finished his debut season with 34 receptions for 552 yards and three touchdowns. He also was responsible for two of the longest passing plays that season for the Ravens. The first was a 74-yard catch-and-run against the Oakland Raiders on November 25 and the second a 68-yard touchdown against the Los Angeles Chargers on December 22. He was top of the charts amongst rookie tight ends in receiving yards and finished third in receptions.

The following year, in 2019, Andrews finished the season with 64 receptions for 852 receiving yards and ten receiving touchdowns. With 10 receiving touchdowns, he led the league among tight ends and tied with Cooper Kupp for second in the league among all positions. In 2020, a season curtailed by COVID, Andrews was placed on the reserve list by the team on 30th November, particularly in light of his potentially higher exposure to the damaging effects of COVID- being a Type 1 Diabetic patient. He however made it out and was reintegrated with the team on December 9th and finished the season with 58 receptions for 701 receiving yards and seven receiving touchdowns.

On 6th September 2021, Andrews was rewarded with a lucrative four-year contract extension by the Ravens which was worth $56 million, including a guaranteed $37.6 million. He went on to finish the season with career-high numbers in receptions- with 107 and receiving yards- with 1361, to add to his 9 receiving touchdowns made in the 17 games he played. In the process, he broke the Baltimore Ravens’ single-season receiving record. He was named in the First-team All-Pro by the Associated Press for his performances.
