After being arrested for breaching bail conditions on Saturday, former Manchester United forward Mason Greenwood has been charged with attempted rape, engaging in controlling behaviour and assault, the Crown Prosecution Service said.
The 21-year-old was out on bail after being arrested on suspicion of rape and assault in January 2022. His bail was extended in June and he was not charged till the latest arrest from his home in Bowdon, Greater Manchester.
Who is Mason Greenwood?
Mason Greenwood was born on October 1, 2022, in Bradford, West Yorkshire. He was arrested in January 2022 after being accused of assault by his former girlfriend Harriet Robson. She posted pictures of injuries that she claimed she incurred from physical abuse by the England international.
He was also under investigation on suspicion of rape following audio released by Robson where she is heard saying that she does not want to have sex, while the footballer is heard replying that he doesn’t care. When being asked to stop again, the footballer is allegedly heard saying: “I asked you politely, and you wouldn’t do it, so what else do you want me to do?”
Within hours of Robson going public with the allegations, he was suspended from playing and training with the club until further notice. Nike also ended his sponsorship deal and he was also removed from the active squads in Electronic Arts FIFA games.
He was released on bail on February 2, 2022, pending further investigations. In the next hearing in April 2022, his bail was extended further till June. He received another extension in June, till his arrest on October 15.
Earlier, a representative for Greater Manchester Police released a statement saying that they were “aware of an allegation regarding a 21-year-old man breaching his bail conditions, and an arrest has been made on Saturday” and added that the enquiries are on.
