Netherlands opener Max O’Dowd, who will face India in the ICC T20 World Cup at the Sydney Cricket Ground on Thursday, October 27 tweeted – “what dreams are made of” in his journal, the journal read – “head to the ball”, “Play straight”, “Play late” and “18:00 – T20 vs India @ SCG”.

Who is Max O’Dowd?

Maxwell Patrick O’Dowd is a Dutch international cricketer. He is 28 years old.

O’Dowd was born in Auckland, New Zealand, on March 4, 1994. His father, Alex O’Dowd, played club cricket for HBS Craeyenhout in the Netherlands as well as first-class cricket for Auckland and Northern Districts in New Zealand.

O’Dowd’s mother possesses a Dutch passport for him. He was born and raised in the Netherlands and left at the age of twelve. 

O’Dowd played in the month-long 2012 European Challenge Series for the Dutch national under-19 cricket team. His tournament includes two half-centuries and a five-wicket haul (5/20) against Jersey.

O’Dowd debuted for the Netherlands in a Twenty20 match against Nepal on July 1, 2015. He was included in the Dutch squads for both the 2015 World Twenty20 Qualifier and the WCL Championship match against PNG.

On September 14, 2015, he faced Scotland in the WCL Championship, marking his List A debut.

He was included in the Netherlands’ One Day International (ODI) squad for their series against Nepal in July 2018, but he was unable to participate. He was selected for the Netherlands’ ODI team for their series against Zimbabwe in June 2019. On June 19, 2019, he played his first ODI for the Netherlands against Zimbabwe.

He was one of seventeen cricketers from the Netherlands who were selected for the team’s senior squad in April 2020.

 O’Dowd became the first batter for the Netherlands to record a century in a T20I match when he hit 133 not out from 73 balls against Malaysia in the second game of the competition. He joined Tom Cooper as the only batsmen to have half-centuries in each of his first three ODI games in May 2021’s first ODI between the Netherlands and Scotland.

O’Dowd was selected for the Dutch team to compete in the 2021 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in September 2021.

O’Dowd led all scorers with 179 runs in three games for the West Indies during their 2022 tour to the Netherlands, including 89 runs in the last match.
