Ons Jabeur was defeated by Iga Swiatek of Poland by a score of 6-2, 7-6 (7-5) in the Women’s singles of the US Open 2022. If she managed a win, she would have been the first Tunisian player to win a Grand Slam. The match was played at the Arthur Ashe Stadium in New York.

Jabeur’s best result in the US Open has been the Finals which she achieved in this year’s edition.

Who is Ons Jabeur?

Ons Jabeur, born on August 28 1994, is a professional Tennis player from Tunisia. She achieved a rank as high as world no. 2 by the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) on June 27, 2022. Currently, she is the no. 1 Tunisian player.

She is the highest ranked African and Arab player on WTA rankings. Ons Jabeur has secured three single’s titles on the WTA tour and 11 on the ITF Women’s circuit, where she also has a doubles title.

Jabeur started playing tennis at the age of three. She was introduced to the game by her mother. She won the junior major girls’ final at the French Open in 2011, becoming the first Arab to win a junior major since 1964. She started her career on the ITF Junior circuit in August 2007. 

While she was still a junior, the 28-year-old had represented Tunisia at the 2010 Youth Olympics winning two singles matches and one doubles match. Her playing style consists of types of hitting that she calls “crazy shots”.

Her best performance was reaching the final of Wimbledon this year. She lost the match to Russian-born Elena Rybakina in three sets but became the first Arab woman and the first from North Africa to reach the final of a Major. 

Jabeur played her first round US Open match on her birthday. She has never played a US Open match on her birthday. She was scheduled to in 2019, but rain delayed the match until the next day, when she won.
