Who is Patrick Mahomes?

Patrick Mahomes II is an American football quarterback for the Kansas City Chiefs of the National Football League (NFL). Born on August 3, 1977, he played college football at Texas Tech University and was drafted No. 10 overall by the Chiefs in the 1st round of the 2017 NFL Draft. Mahomes guided the Chiefs to their first Super Bowl participation in 50 years during the 2019–20 playoffs.

The majority of experts and scouts predicted that Mahomes would be selected in the first or second round. Mahomes was ranked third-best QB by ESPN and second best by SI.com. His passes were timed at 60 mph during the throwing drills at the NFL Scouting Combine, matching Logan Thomas and Bryan Bennett for the quickest pass ever measured there. His pro day at Texas Tech was attended by representatives from 28 NFL organizations.

Mahomes was chosen by the Kansas City Chiefs in the first round of the 2017 NFL Draft, 10th overall. The Chiefs, who were supposed to pick 27th overall, traded up with the Buffalo Bills to take 10th overall in the draft.

Mahomes was given a guaranteed four-year, $16.42 million deal by the Chiefs on July 20, 2017, along with a $10.08 million signing bonus. Before the Week 17’s matchup against the Denver Broncos, the Chiefs announced that they will rest starting quarterback Alex Smith and start rookie Patrick Mahomes instead. This is because they had already secured a playoff spot that season and Mahomes hot his debut start in NFL.

The Chiefs made the decision to trade Smith to the Washington Redskins during the 2018 season. This made Mahomes the starting QB. Due to his phenomenal performance throughout the season, Mahomes won several awards. He won the 2019 Best NFL Player ESPY Award and the Kansas City Club 101 Awards for AFC Offensive Player of the Year in addition to being selected for the 2019 Pro Bowl and First Team All-Pro. He was also named the NFL MVP, making him the Chiefs’ first-ever champion.

He finished the 2019 season with 4,031 yards and 26 touchdowns with only five interceptions.  The quarterback was chosen for the 2020 Pro Bowl, but he was unable to take the field because of his involvement in Super Bowl LIV. He went on to defeat the 49ers 20-31 in Super Bowl LIV, giving the Chiefs their first victory in 50 years. Mahomes was voted Super Bowl MVP after he threw for 286 yards and two touchdowns and ran for an additional 29 yards and one score. The third-youngest player to win the award in NFL history, he was also the league’s youngest quarterback.

He led the Chiefs again to the Super Bowl in 2020 season. Mahomes passed for 270 yards and two interceptions in the Chiefs’ 9-31 Super Bowl LV loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. It was both the first time since he started at quarterback for the Chiefs that the offence failed to score a touchdown and his first loss by double digits in the NFL. The second-largest known contract in athletic history was signed by Mahomes in 2020 when he agreed to a 10-year agreement worth $477 million, plus a further $26 million in potential bonuses.
