Ronald Koeman is a Dutch professional football manager and
former player. He was most recently the
manager of La Liga club Barcelona, which sacked him on Wednesday after a streak
of poor performances by the team.
Born on March 21, 1963, in Zaandam, North-Holland, Koeman
began playing for Groningen before transferring to Ajax in 1983, where he
managed to win the national Eredivisie title in the 1984–85 season. He then
hopped on to join Ajax’s rivals PSV Eindhoven in 1986 where he won three
consecutive Dutch top-flight titles from 1986-87 to 1988-89. He also won the
European Cup with PSV in 1988.
Koeman then moved on to Barcelona in 1989 and became part of
Johan Cruyff’s “Dream Team”. He helped the Catalan giants in winning the
La Liga four years in a row between 1991 and 1994, while also lifting the team
to a 1991–92 European Cup victory by scoring the winning goal of the final
against the Italian side Sampdoria.
Talking about his managerial career, Koeman has three
Eredivisie titles to his name as a manager. He won the Dutch top-flight title
twice with Ajax (2001–02 and 2003–04) and once with PSV Eindhoven (2006–07). He
is the only individual to have both played for and managed the “Big
Three” of Dutch football: Ajax, PSV, and Feyenoord.
He won the 2008 Copa Del Rey with Valencia. Koeman has also
coached Benfica in Portugal and the English Premier League clubs Southampton
and Everton. He was the coach of the Dutch national football team which ended
up finishing runners-up in the 2019 UEFA Nations League. He was appointed
manager by FC Barcelona in August of 2020 but the club ended up sacking him in
October 2021 after just 14 months at the helm due to a poor start to the season.
