After signing Tyreek Hill and Chase Edmonds, Miami Dolphins enhanced their offence by signing former New England Patriots running back Sony Michel. In his four-year career, Michel has played on two Super Bowl-winning teams, first with the New England Patriots in Super Bowl LIII in 2018, where he scored the game’s lone touchdown to give the Patriots a lead in the fourth quarter, and then with Los Angeles Rams in 2021.

Who is Sony Michel?

Sony Michel is an American football running back for the Miami Dolphins of the National Football League (NFL). Born on February 17, 1995, he played college football at Georgia and was drafted by the New England Patriots in the first round of the 2018 NFL Draft. 

In college, Michel and Nick Chubb together amassed 8,259 career running yards for the Georgia Bulldogs, breaking the FBS record of 8,192 held by Eric Dickerson and Craig James. The New England Patriots selected Michel with the 31st overall choice in the first round of the 2018 NFL Draft. Michel missed the whole preseason and the season opener against the Houston Texans due to a knee injury he sustained in training camp.

In Week 2’s matchup with the Jacksonville Jaguars, he made his NFL debut. In the 31-20 road defeat, he gained 34 yards on 10 carries and added a six-yard reception. Two weeks later, in a 38-7 victory over the Miami Dolphins, he had a breakout performance with 26 carries for 112 yards and a touchdown. With 7 receptions for 50 yards and 931 running yards, Michel ended his first season with six touchdowns.

With an 11-5 record, the Patriots won the AFC East and received the No. 2 seed in the AFC Playoffs, along with a first-round bye. In the 41-28 victory over the Los Angeles Chargers in the Divisional Round, Michel had 24 touches for 129 yards and three touchdowns. He ran for 113 yards and two touchdowns on 29 carries in the Chiefs’ 37-31 overtime triumph during the AFC Championship game. Between the divisional and conference championship games, Michel scored five touchdowns on the ground, shattering the NFL mark for the most playoff rushing touchdowns by a rookie.

He carried the ball 18 times for a game-high 94 yards on February 3, 2019, in Super Bowl LIII against the Los Angeles Rams, scoring the game’s lone touchdown. The decisive score in the 13-3 victory came in the middle of the fourth quarter. Since he scored six touchdowns in 13 regular-season games, Michel has increased his rookie postseason running record to six touchdowns in three games as the game’s leading rusher.

Michel ran 21 times for 83 yards and his first season rushing touchdown in Week 2’s 43-0 road win over the Miami Dolphins during the 2019 season. Overall, Michel ended the 2019 campaign with 12 receptions for 94 yards and 912 running yards, scoring seven times.

Due to his injuriesm his first match in the 2020 season was the 36-20 victory over the Las Vegas Raiders in Week 3. Overall, Michel concluded the 2020 campaign with 114 receiving yards and one score in addition to 449 rushing yards. On August 25, 2021, Michel was dealt to the Los Angeles Rams in exchange for fifth and sixth round picks in the 2022 NFL Draft. With 845 yards, Michel was the team’s leading rusher during the regular season. When the Rams defeated the Cincinnati Bengals in Super Bowl LVI, Michel won  his second Super Bowl championship. Michel inked a contract with the Miami Dolphins on May 10, 2022.
