Tony Beasley has been named the Texas Rangers’ interim manager after the MLB outfit fired Chris Woodward on Monday. The sacking came after the team failed to qualify for the postseason for the sixth consecutive season. 

Beasley will be managing the Rangers against the Oakland A’s on Monday and will continue through the remainder of the 2022 season.

“Chris Young and I had the very difficult task of informing Chris Woodward of our decision today.In his tenure as Rangers’ manager, Chris worked tirelessly under what was at times some difficult circumstances,” Texas Rangers President of Baseball Operations Jon Daniels said. 

“On behalf of the entire Texas Rangers organization, we thank Chris and wish him and his family the very best.”

Who is Tony Beasley?

After serving as a third-base coach for the Rangers since 2015, Beasley was promoted to interim manager. The 55-year-old from Fredericksburg, Virginia spent nine years playing in the minor leagues before starting off as a coach. 

He was drafted in the 19th round by the Baltimore Orioles in the 1989 MLB draft. Tony Beasley played for the affiliates of the Orioles and the Pirates and earned three different All-Star selections.

He first managed a team, the Williamsport Crosscutters, in 2001. He led the club to a 46-26 regular season record and a first-place finish. The side was declared co-champions of the New York–Penn League along with Brooklyn.

The 55-year-old then was a bench coach in the majors. In 2006, he was appointed as the third-base coach for the Nationals under manager Frank Robinson. Next year, he was named the minor league infield coordinator for the Pirates. From 2008 to 2010, he was the third base coach for the team.

Tony Beasley was appointed as the manager for the Nationals Double-A team, Triple-A team, and the co-field coordinator for the Nationals minor league system.

Beasley has also managed the Mesa Desert Dogs during the Arizona Fall League in 2004. In his tenure with the Rangers, the interim manager has had two ALDS appearances. They lost both series’ to their rivals, the Toronto Blue Jays.
