Tress Way is an American football punter in the NFL who plays for the Washington Commanders. He was signed by the Chicago Bears in 2013 as an undrafted free agent.

Way was born in Tulsa, Oklahoma on 18th April 1990, and attended Union High School there. Thereafter he joined the University of Oklahoma where he played for the Oklahoma Sooners.

He was an undrafted player in the 2013 NFL Draft, and the Chicago Bears signed him in April 2013 to challenge their veteran punter Adam Podlesh. However, he was waived by the Bears in August 2013. 

In August 2014, the Washington Commanders signed Way off waivers, and he became a starting punter for the Redskins that year and enjoyed a productive rookie campaign. With a punting average of 47.5 yards, Way led the NFL in gross punting average, and finished the season with 77 punts for 3,659 net yards. He was named the special team’s captain prior to the start of the 2015 season, and after a second successful season for the Redskins, he was signed to a 5-year contract on March 12th, 2016.

In week 10 of the 2018 season, Way helped the Commanders to a 16-3 victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, punting 5 times for a net average of 47.5 which earned him his first NFL Special Teams Player of the Week accolade. 

He repeated the feat the following year, in 2019, in a 29-21 win against the Carolina Panthers in which he hit 2 of his 5 punts inside the 20 with a 58 yard average per punt as well as a long of 79 yards. That season, he was also voted to the 2020 Pro Bowl- his first ever Pro Bowl appearance, and was named a second team All-Pro. This string of impressive performances also earned him a 4-year contract extension worth $15 million at the end of 2019.

In 2020, he was named Special Teams Player of the Week on 2 separate occasions- in week 11 against the Cincinnati Bengals, and in Week 14 against the San Francisco 49ers.
