Soccer’s largest stage has been set, and Andi Sullivan, a resident of Lorton, Virginia, is one of the 23 women selected for the U.S. Women’s National Team roster. She will get to live out her ambition and represent the country in the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

Who is Andi Sullivan?

Andi Maureen Sullivan, an American soccer player who competes for the Washington Spirit in the National Women’s Soccer League and the US women’s national team, was born on December 20, 1995.

Sullivan grew up in Lorton, Virginia, as the youngest of four siblings and attended South County High School. She was a member of the Lee Mount Vernon Soccer Club, Bethesda Soccer Club (Freedom), and McLean Youth Soccer. In 2013, the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) honored her as the national Youth Player of the Year. Additionally, she was named the top college recruit by Top Drawer Soccer.

Sullivan started 23 of the 24 matches she played in her freshman season in 2014. She scored her first goal for the Cardinal against the University of Dayton and finished the season with four assists, ranking third on the team. As a result of her outstanding performance, she was named to Top Drawer Soccer’s All-Freshman First Team, as well as the Pac-12 First Team and the NSCAA All-Pacific Region Second Team. Additionally, she earned the titles of Pac-12 Freshman of the Year and Top Drawer Soccer and Soccer America’s National Freshman of the Year.

As a senior, Sullivan scored in the College Cup final, helping Stanford win their second national championship with three goals and six assists. After reaching the finals in 2016 and the semifinals in 2015, she earned the Hermann Trophy.

Sullivan participated in the USL W-League from 2012 through 2015. In 2012, she was a member of D.C. United Women, which underwent a name change to become the Washington Spirit Reserves for the 2013–2015 seasons.

The Washington Spirit chose Sullivan with the first overall pick in the 2018 NWSL College Draft on January 18, 2018. Except for the final game of the season, which she missed because she was competing with the United States U-23 in the Nordic Cup, Sullivan played in every game for the Spirit.

In the voting for the 2018 NWSL Rookie of the Year award, Sullivan came in second place, with the winner being Imani Dorsey. For the 2019 NWSL season, she relocated back to Washington and was appointed club captain.

Sullivan has played for the Senior National Team, Under-15, Under-17, Under-20, and Under-23 National Teams for the United States. At the 2012 CONCACAF Women’s U-17 Championship in Guatemala, Sullivan represented the United States and contributed to the under-17 national team’s victory. She co-captained the squad to a spot in the 2014 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup, despite being the youngest player on the under-20 national team roster at the 2014 CONCACAF Women’s U-20 Championship.

She was selected for the American U-23 squad for the 2018 Nordic tournament on August 23, 2018.

On October 19, 2016, she faced Switzerland in a friendly international match and received her maiden cap with the senior national team. For her outstanding play, she was named Player of the Match. Just a few days later, on October 23, 2016, she earned her first assist. On November 10 and 13, she participated in two additional games and added another assist. However, on November 18, 2016, while participating in a college game, she ruptured her ACL, which led to a significant portion of the year spent injured. Despite the setback, she made a successful return to the national team on October 19, 2017.

The United States won the 2018 SheBelieves Cup for the second time, and Sullivan was named to the 23-player team. She was listed on the preliminary squad of 35 players for the 2018 CONCACAF Women’s Championship; however, she was not included in the final roster of 20 players.

In 2019, Sullivan was initially left off the roster for the January camp but was later added by head coach Jill Ellis. Additionally, she was selected for the 2019 SheBelieves Cup team.
