Similar to the other sporting communities, only a selected few make it to the very top of the world of cricket and Virat Kohli is one of them. Regarded as one of the most gifted batters of his generation, Kohli is also a former captain of the Indian cricket team. However, the talented batter has hit a slump, not being able to replicate his usual fiery form on pitch for quite some time.

Kohli has tasted success at the very top of the sport. However, while people associated with cricket or belonging from countries which play the sport know about him well, Kohli is not as well known in other parts of the world. Keeping it into consideration, let’s take a look at Who Virat Kohli is.

Born on November 5, 1988 in New Delhi, India, Kohli began playing cricket from a very early age. He began his training at the West Delhi Cricket Academy in 1998, before he was selected for the Delhi U-15 side in 2002. He went on to make his List A debut in 2006 and first class debut in the same year.

2006 was a memorable year for the then-young batter as he was selected for the India U-19 team for a tour of England. He later captained the team to win the 2008 U-19 World Cup before he was inducted into the senior squad in the same year.

Since 2008, Virat Kohli has scored 12327 in ODI, 8074 in Tests and 3308 in T20I. He has also 27 and 43 centuries in Tests and ODI respectively, while his best T20I knock while playing for his country has been 94*.

Throughout the years, Kohli has registered and broken several records in cricket. As a part of the Fab 4, he has been the fastest player to reach 7000 runs (138 matches) in Test matches, fastest to 12,000 runs in ODI (242 matches), fastest to 2500 runs in T20I (68 matches) and many more.

He has an impressive record in the Indian Premier League (IPL) as well, where he has played for Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), scripting many records in the league as well. He has been associated with RCB since the inception of the league in 2008, however, is yet to win the trophy.

However, since he fell into a slump, Kohli has not been able to score as frequently as his fans would like him to. He has been suggested to take a sabbatical from cricket and return after that. The 33-year-old has lost his captain’s armband as a result and critics have asked to drop him from the team.
