Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel has been sacked by the club after a disgraceful away defeat to Dinamo Zagreb in the Champions League on Tuesday. Tuchel was one of Chelsea’s most successful managers in recent years, however, his sacking did not come as a surprise to anyone who follows the club closely.

During his stint at Stamford Bridge, Thomas Tuchel has won many trophies, including the Champions League in 2021. Although the club finished third in the Premier League last season and was knocked out of the Champions League by Real Madrid in the quarter-final stage, the relationship between the club and the head coach remained frictionless.

Things started falling apart at the start of the 2022-23 Premier League season after Chelsea failed to register wins against mid-table teams like Southampton and Leeds, even after being the highest spender in the entire league. The tipping point came on Tuesday when Chelsea could not score a goal against Dinamo Zagreb, a Croatian team, and lost 1-0.

In the post-match presser, the 49-year-old appeared frustrated with his team’s performance.

“I am angry at myself. I am angry at our performance. This is a huge underperformance on our part,” he said, adding, “I don’t really know where this performance today comes from. For me, it’s a lack of determination, a lack of hunger and to actually do the things at the highest level”.

The club said in a statement on the official website, ” As the new ownership group reaches 100 days since taking over the Club and as it continues its hard work to take the club forward, the new owners believe it is the right time to make this transition”.

Experts are saying that Tuchel’s criticism of the club’s transfer policy has played a role in his sacking. In the recently closed summer transfer window Chelsea spent a total of £266 million with Tuchel at the helm.

The statement also said that the coaching staff at Chelsea will take charge of the squad till a new head coach is appointed at Stamford Bridge.
