Why everything changes for CSK with Suresh Raina’s return to squad for IPL 2021
Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have been a dominant force in the Indian Premier League (IPL) since its inception. Be it be the bowling department, the batting or fielding, CSK has always maintained their consistency with decent performances. A winner of three IPL titles, CSK has everything in them that makes them special.
How, you ask? Well, other than MS Dhoni's presence and him leading the team, it's the team work that has always come to the fore. If one department fails, the other rises; if one player fails, the other compensates. The pressure is not really just on one talent.
However, things weren't the same for them in the 2020 edition. Dubbed as the ‘Dad’s army', CSK faltered time and again, finishing seventh in the IPL points table.
This was also the first time that they failed to qualify for the playoffs for the first in the history of the tournament.
Having said that, in the 14th edition of the cash-rich league, you would be a fool to underestimate the skills and temperament of the Chennai-based franchise. Why? Because the 2021 edition will see the return of Suresh Raina, our very own ‘Chinna Thala’.
Raina pulled out of the tournament last year, citing personal reasons. His absence was visible - with the batting faltering, fielding taking a hit and the bowling department was out of sorts. But with his return, things are going to change for CSK.
Raina has often provided the balance a team needs. Batting in the middle order, Raina makes sure to either get the team off to a solid start or hangs in there long enough to help his team post a competitive total on board.
When it comes to fielding, be it the deep region, the point or the long-on/off, no ball gets past him. He always keeps talking to his players, inspiring them and keeping their spirits high.
In the bowling department, Raina definitely bolsters the spin attack. With his line and length, the left-handed batsman doesn't often provide room for the batsman to hit.
An important link to CSK's winning spree, Raina's experience, coupled with Dhoni's composed demeanor, add to it the other players' guile, CSK basically is an unbeatable team and can hold a fortress that is impenetrable.
In 2020, in Raina's absence, light work was made of CSK.
In 2021, in Raina's presence, CSK will be making light work of other teams.
Chennai Super Kings start their IPL campaign on April 10 in a match against the Delhi Capitals.
